10. SOCIAL STUDIES SIXTH AND SEVENTH GRADE TEXTBOOK ADOPTION
The Learning Services Department has been monitoring the sixth and seventh grade pilot of new social studies curricular materials during the 2021-2022 school year. New materials were considered because our current resources are not aligned with the C3 Framework, do not include physical resources, and provide limited supplemental support. These resources are limited or outdated including instructional strategies, supplemental materials, and teaching practices, which are not representative of a culturally responsive curriculum. Additionally, current materials are not inclusive of any online access for students and teachers. A broad committee of sixth and seventh-grade teachers from across the District piloted and reviewed three curricular resources and recommended the adoption of World Geography ©2019 and Ancient Civilizations ©2018 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, for sixth and seventh grade consecutively, which met a number of criteria, including alignment with the C3 Framework and Michigan Social Studies standards, student engagement, opportunities for assessment, technology access and variety of supplemental resources. This process has been endorsed by Administration, and a motion for approval of the textbook purchase will be presented at the June 2, 2022, board meeting. |
11. LAKES AREA YOUTH ASSISTANCE VOLUNTEER BOARD MEMBERS
Lakes Area Youth Assistance (LAYA) is a prevention program within the Oakland County Circuit Court. Youth Assistance has been in Walled Lake since 1960. Their mission statement is to strengthen youth and families and to prevent and reduce incidents of juvenile delinquency, neglect and abuse through volunteer involvement. In keeping with their established by-laws, LAYA has requested Board approval of their volunteer Board members for the 2022-23 school year.
