Description:
In October, we had our Spooky Carnival put on by the students and hosted a student store at the community bazaar! We were lucky to have a field trip to our local polling station for the election day.  The following day, our local Election Chair, our very own Mrs. Judy, led our students in a mock election and the results tally for all items on the ballet. It was a great experience for our middle and high school students to have! Thank you to Coffman Cove Polling officials and Mrs. Judy!

DISTRICT WIDE HEATING PROJECT
 
OIL HEATERS:
Coffman Cove boilers have been serviced and found pumps and controls bad - Pumps arrived at the end of last week, will be installed later this week if all holds well.
Thorne Bay School boiler repairs have been completed - 11-19-24 work will commence 11-20-24 to resolve major issues with operation
Thorne Bay Gym/DO boilers are still giving issue and repairs continue  11-19-24 Completed - NOW BOTH Boilers can operate simultaneously (for a few hours) as they should
 
Teacher Housing:
Most of the teacher housing furnaces and water heaters have been tuned up. We are replacing a few burners and water heaters that have failed or are no longer serviceable and need repairs - Completing  this week hopefully while Ketchikan Mechanical is still on island repairing school heaters
 
 
WOOD HEATERS: 
ALL systems have been cleaned and all parts are on order (some trickling in) - a lot of the smaller parts arrived this week, major parts still back ordered
Hollis’ Garn has a small leak and still needs to be piped correctly (misplumbed during new building construction). The leak should be smooth to fix as it is pretty easy to get to.
Whale Pass is very happy with GARN since repair !! :~) 11-19-24 
Coffman Cove Greenhouse boiler is still waiting for a few parts so we can refill and test that system out for year-round growing opportunities :~)
Coffman Cove school and housing units will be retrofitted with updated controls to increase efficiency and reliability of operation. - Controllers arrived this week
 
OTHER PROJECTS:
Whale Pass wood - Toby made several trips to deliver more firewood from Naukati supplier that was donated to SISD, the remaining wood for the time was brought back to Thorne Bay by Toby  and me. We will continue as long as the supply lasts.
Naukati water system is giving troubles and we are currently in progress of diagnosing and repairing as rapidly as possible. NEW-NEW Pump arrived undamaged and will be installed soon
Hollis water issues are ongoing, and working through system to try and get repairs. 11-19-24 THANK YOU to Hollis group for all your patience and effort to stay running. - More problems unresolved  with water in Hollis, but working on them also.
Thorne Bay - Gym Lighting still trying to repair them
Thorne Bay - Gym Fire Pump repairs are still in progress - parts have arrived and contractor’s place and will be shipped here in advance 10-23-24 Parts recvd in TB, more equipment failure, working to  find replacement equipment. 11-19-24 More failures, and now waiting for more parts.
 
OTHER UPDATES
Fire Marshal Inspection from September, gave a 3 page report of issues that needed repairs. 11-15-24 ALL cited issues signed off.
Brightways/Ginger’s Office Cabin propane heater repaired and fixed 3 Propane leaks in system
Very busy month working to get all the heating systems working and attempting to get firewood stock completed and filled
 
Have a Happy - WARM - and Safe Thanksgiving break, from the Maintenance Team

Description:

ADP DEED Scores and Amplify Training 

 We recently received our ADP DEED scores, and the results are highly encouraging. Our students are demonstrating age-appropriate behaviors and skills, indicating strong progress toward becoming successful Southeast Island Scholars. These positive results underscore our commitment to fostering an environment where each student can thrive. 

 On November 15th, our Amplify training coordinator, Angela Holstedt, will work with teachers and paraprofessionals on using DIBELS benchmark data, identifying students for intervention, and understanding the role of teachers as interventionists. This training is designed to equip our staff with the tools needed to provide targeted support and improve student outcomes. 

 About Amplify: Amplify is a data-driven instructional program that enables educators to personalize learning based on student performance data. With this implementation, we aim to help each student demonstrate measurable growth in future assessments. This training reflects our commitment to enhancing instructional practices and achieving academic success for our students. 

 Highly Qualified Paraprofessionals 

 As of November 8, 2024, all SISD paraprofessionals are now classified as Highly Qualified, as mandated by DEED. This mandate requires all paraprofessionals to either hold a minimum number of college credits or pass a State of Alaska-approved assessment that demonstrates the academic ability and professionalism needed to serve our students. We extend a huge shoutout to our paraprofessionals for their commitment and dedication in meeting these standards. 

 November Inservice - Educator Well-being 

 On November 8, 2024, during our inservice day, our instructional staff gathered to address educator stressors, focusing on well-being and work-life balance. Each instructional paraprofessional and teacher developed an Individual Educator Plan (IEP), setting realistic goals for professional growth, wellness, and a healthy work-life balance. This initiative reflects our dedication to supporting our educators in their personal and professional development.

 Special Education: Transition Skills 

Our Special Education teachers and paraprofessionals have been actively working with students on essential transition skills. These efforts focus on building skills in areas of personal interest, developing life skills within the context of safety and living on Prince of Wales (POW), and enhancing prevocational skills. Highlights from the program include one student learning the basics of logging and firewood harvesting and another student in Coffman Cove working on repairing a 3D printer. 

Special recognition goes to Matt Gore, Special Education teacher, and Derek Shell, paraprofessional, for their dedication to these hands-on, skill-building experiences. We are proud of our students and staff for their continued commitment to growth, learning, and community support.
