6.A. The May Student Spotlight will highlight the Westfield Elementary Dance Club. The dance club began meeting twice a week after school in January to prepare for an April performance at Glen Crest. Club members are fourth- and fifth-grade students who love having an outlet to dance and make connections with friends. Dance Club sponsors are Natalie Kielion and Sarah Chatman.

6.B. Congratulations to the five Glen Crest athletes who participated in the Special Olympics spring games at Marmion Academy on May 3: sixth graders Simra Khan and Oliver Lamar; and eighth graders Quinn Ruden, Hazel Tieman, and Eddie White. Thank you to Special Olympics coaches Glen Crest physical education teachers Kelly Tuggle and Kelly Nordlund.

6.C. Congratulations to the Park View Elementary “Smart Cookies” team for winning the recent Battle of the Books! Students from CCSD 89 elementary schools read 20 books, then answered trivia questions about each of the books during the competition. Congratulations to the “Smart Cookies”: Stella Hiotis, Maddie Myers, Mila Pesce, Paisley Ravenscraft, and Vella Thornton. Special thanks to the LMC directors Suzanne Kimmerly, Megan Mau, Karl Mennecke, Rose O'Connell, and Joy Yerly for organizing the event. |

6.D. Thank you to CCSD 89 elementary PE teachers, Nate Arenson, Will Brewer, and Missy Hanneman, for inspiring students to develop healthy heart habits and support the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge. This year, 369 students participated and raised $34,898!

6.E. The week of May 4-8 was Teacher Appreciation Week. Thank you to every staff member who contributes to students’ learning for life. The CCSD 89 staff consistently finds innovative ways to inspire students to reach their full academic and social-emotional potential. The entire community benefits from your dedicated work!

6.F. National School Nurse Day was celebrated on May 6. The school nurse is an essential part of the school community. Whether it’s caring for a child who is feeling ill, bandaging a scrape, or advocating for healthy schoolwide practices, the nurses ensure a safe environment for learning. Thank you to our nurses: district nurse Araceli Orozco, Arbor View nurse Maggie Dahlman, Briar Glen nurse Kristi Haan, Park View nurse Amy Mescher, and Westfield nurse Linda Eledan.

6.G. Thank you to Dana Early, Holly Redfern, Kim Pellegrini, and Isabel Rubinas who have served as the PTC presidents in our schools, for their tireless efforts and commitment to the students, staff and families of D89.
