3.A.1) Office of Education Equity Fund Allocations for 2010-11

Ron Hagland, Supervisor of Education Equity, presented recommendations for the Office of Education Equity 2010-11 Budget and program design, which has been realligned to close the acheievement gap amongst our students of color.  This presentation included information on the adjustments to all Educational Equity fund allocations.
3.A.2) Duluth Public Schools Kindergarten Programming Recommendation for the 2010-11 School Year

Keith Dixon, Joe Hill, and Tawnyea Lake presented Duluth Public Schools Kindergarten programming recommendations for the for the 2010-11 school year.
3.A.3) Duluth Public Schools Head Start Program Self Assessment Presentation and Shared Governance Training

Pam Rees, Head Start Director, presented information on the required Self Assessment of the Duluth Public Schools Head Start Program, which is a systematic look at the program with staff, parents, the Policy Council, the Governing Board, partners, and community members to assist in identifying program strengths and areas needing improvement.  The information gathered through the Self Assessment will be used to create an action plan for program improvements.   Governance training was also provided, which is an annual requirement.
3.A.4) Duluth Public Schools Head Start Community Assessment Presentation

Pam Rees, Head Start Director, presented information on the required Community Assessment of the Duluth Public Schools Head Start Program, which is conducted every three years using community trends, population figures, poverty rates, housing information, etc. to guide the Duluth Public Schools Head Start Program's decision-making process.
3.A.5) Western Middle School Name and Confirmation of Elementary School Names

It is recommended that the western middle school be named Lincoln Park Middle School. 

Additionally, in keeping with the longstanding tradition of retaining existing elementary school names when the buildings are remodeled, expanded, or rebuilt on the same site, it is recommended to confirm that Piedmont will continue to be named Piedmont Elementary School and Grant will continue to be named Grant Elementary School.

A recommendation for the eastern middle school will be presented in the future.
3.A.6) Elementary Boundary Reconfiguration (This item was not presented.)
Adjusted elementary boundaries will be presented with a recommendation to implement next fall. 
3.B. Resolution E-3-10-2742 - Acceptance of Grant Awards to Duluth Public Schools

Attached is Resolution E-3-10-2742 - Acceptance of Grant Awards to Duluth Public Schools, to accept and approve grant awards for the following organization:

3.C. Extended Trip Requests

The following extended trip requests are submitted for approval:
  1. STC Automotive Program's SKILLS USA Club will be attending the SKILLS USA State Student Conference and Competition at Hennepin Technical College in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota from April 9-11, 2010.  The total cost of the trip is $2,059 and will be funded with activity funds and student fees.
  2. Grant's fourth grade students will be attending Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in Finland, Minnesota from March 22-24, 2010.  The total cost of the trip is $6,000 and will be funded through fund raising activities.
  3. Central High School Music Department students will be taking a cultural trip to New York City, New York from April 14-19, 2010.  The cost of the trip is $550 per student and will be funded with student fees.
  4. STC FCCLA-HERO students will be attending the State Leadership Conference at the Grand Rios Hotel and Hennepin Technical College in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota from April 19-21, 2010.  The total cost of the trip is $1,623 and will be funded with a combination of grant funds, student activity funds, donations, and student fees.

Description:

Recommendation:  It is recommended that the Duluth School Board approve all day everyday kindergarten for all elementary sites in the district beginning the 2010-11 school year with the option of allowing parents to select one-half day kindergarten if preferred.
