8.2.a. Approval of Title IV A Funds for Student Support and Academic Enrichment (SSAE) Grant
Rationale:

Bristol has received a federal grant in the amount of $136,804 through Title IV, Part A.  With the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, the Every Student Succeeds Act provides funding under the newly authorized subpart of Title IV with the intention to 1) provide all students with access to well-rounded education; 2) improve school conditions for student learning; and 3) improve the use of technology in order to improve academic achievement and digital literacy of all students.

Priority in funding must be given to those schools that are identified as having students with the greatest needs, the highest number of students from low-income families who are counted for Title I and are identified for support under Title I.

10.2. TEAM Mentors/Cooperating Teachers Applicants
Rationale:

Teachers trained to serve as TEAM (Teacher Education and Mentoring) mentors and cooperating teachers provide assistance and support to student teachers and first year beginning teachers in the district in areas such as lesson design and classroom management and provide feedback and support in the areas of instructional planning and student assessment. Cooperating teachers are those teachers who are trained to work with student teachers. We need to increase the number of cooperating teachers in the district in order to meet the need of student teachers. Mentors must be assigned to first-year teachers to provide mentoring and support to newly certified teachers; this program is required by the State Department of Education. Principals recruit teachers to apply to be a TEAM mentor/cooperating teachers; the applications are reviewed by the TEAM Coordinating Committee. The following teachers were approved by the TEAM Coordinating Committee and are recommended to be TEAM Mentors/cooperating teachers.  Approved teachers must attend a three day training program and update their training every three years.

10.3. Request that the BOE approve Final Plans and Cost Estimate for the BCHS UST Removal
Rationale:

The Board of Education is eligible for reimbursement for removal and replacement of underground storage tanks.

The Bristol Central High School tank is nearing 30 years old and must be removed and replaced to remain compliant with the State of CT guidelines.

11. CURRICULUM REVISION

11.1. Information Processing II Curriculum - Second Reading
Rationale:

The Information Processing II curriculum was last revised in 2006. The state of Connecticut standards for Career and Technical Education have been updated, leading to a need to revise the Information Processing courses.  Information Processing I was revised and approved by the Board of Education in March 2018.  Information Processing II was redesigned to expand upon students’ learning from Information Processing I and offer opportunities for students to gain the knowledge and skills they would need to become certified Microsoft Office Specialists.

The ability to use Microsoft Office is a vital skill in today’s world for both college and careers.. Students will learn advanced features in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Microsoft Word topics include: columns, templates, wizards, merging, advanced tables and charts. Microsoft Excel topics will include: creating spreadsheets, analyzing worksheet data, goal seeking, and what/if analysis. Microsoft PowerPoint topics will include advanced graphics and media techniques, tables and charts, and creating professional presentations by adding audio, video, and sound to slideshows.  At the end of this course, students may choose to take an assessment that could lead to certification.

11.2. Sports and Entertainment Marketing Curriculum - Second Reading
Rationale:

Sports and Entertainment Marketing is the second course in the CTE Marketing Pathway.  The first course, Introduction to Marketing, was approved in the 2016-17 school year.  To qualify as a career and technical education pathway in an area, our district needs to offer at least two courses. Qualifying as a CTE pathway benefits students by deepening their understanding of the content and benefits our program in that this pathway could now potentially qualify for funding under the federal Perkins grant.  Funding would support materials for the pathway, authentic on-the-job learning experiences for students, and professional learning experiences for our teachers.  Additionally, our district could begin to pursue a pathway in this area with Tunxis Community College, potentially expanding our opportunities to offer college credit for our students. 

Sports and Entertaining Marketing is designed to study marketing principles and concepts in the sports and entertainment industry.  Instructional topics will include an orientation to the sports and entertainment industry, economics, event execution, career opportunities, decision making, event marketing, advertising and promotion, and legal aspects/contracts.  Students will use technology to complete case studies, class assignments, simulations, and projects.  Authentic learning opportunities will be created for students as they begin to apply some of their learning to marketing our own Bristol Public Schools athletic events.

12. TEXTBOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

12.1. Information Processing II Textbook - First Reading
Rationale:

The Information Processing II curriculum has been revised.  A textbook resource for the course was last purchased in 2006.  Due to the updated standards at the state level for Career and Technical Education, the revisions made to our Bristol curriculum, incorporating a broader range of technical skills and applications, and changes in the technology utilized within the course, new textbooks are required.  The broad goals of the course seek to ensure that students are equipped with the knowledge and skills within the Microsoft Office Suite to meet the technological and business demands required by the opportunities they will have at college and within the professional working world.  Thus, a textbook is needed to provide students with activities and simulations that represent the demands they will encounter in their future professional careers.  In addition, the textbook being recommended is most closely aligned to the tasks that are required of students within the Microsoft Office Specialist certification process, allowing our teachers the opportunity to best prepare students.  The textbook that the committee recommends is Learn by Doing:  Microsoft Office Specialist, BE Publishing, 2018.

12.2. Sports and Entertainment Marketing Textbook - First Reading
Rationale:

Sports and Entertainment Marketing is a new course within our Career and Technical Education department and is the second course within the marketing pathway.  The textbook selected for the course provides students not only with content that is aligned to the standards upon which our curriculum is based but also provides students with tasks that simulate the types of scenarios they will encounter should they choose to pursue marketing as a potential career after high school.

12.3. World History - Textbook Recommendation - Academic level - Second Reading
Rationale:

The current grade 9 academic World History textbook is over 10 years old. There are not currently enough copies in the district to allocate to all students as texts have been damaged or lost over the years. Additionally, teachers are in need of more online access for students with the ability for students to use eBooks.

The curriculum for World History has been recently revised to meet the new CT Social Studies Frameworks (approved by the State in 2015, approved by the district in 2016). The revised curriculum requires that students learn content across four social studies disciplines (civics, economics, geography, and history) within each course and adopt an inquiry approach to learning social studies skills and content.  The change in curriculum, coupled with the current status of our textbooks, required that we seek another resource for our students. Teachers were looking for more multimedia resources to engage students, inspire inquiry, and facilitate the development of historical thinking skills.

The textbook being recommended is The Pearson World History: Modern Era.  This book offers a variety in-text and online resources to engage students in the content area, encourage historical investigation, and provide access to content to all students. This textbook program is organized in a four part framework that encourages students to connect, investigate, synthesize and demonstrate understanding.  Embedded activities include interactive maps and charts, audio versions of the text, and proprietary access to NBC Learn videos for every topic. The Pearson online platform (Pearson Realize) supports both web-based and app-based access which allows students to download the ebook, take notes, highlight, engage in discussions with other classmates around teacher-posed questions, and complete teacher assignments on any device. The Pearson Realize also has a proprietary contract with Google Classroom. Teachers will be able to create and assess assignments for students digitally on either platform.

This textbook is aligned to the Common Core State Standards, the C3 Social Studies Framework, and Bristol Public Schools objectives. There are multiple opportunities within the text and through the additional provided research to provide practice to strengthen their 21st century skills.
