5.B. CABE Student Leadership Award
Speaker(s):
Greg Bugbee
Rationale:

This is CABE's twentieth annual Student Leadership Award.  The program was developed to give local boards of education the opportunity to recognize student achievement and potential, and for the board itself to be recognized as a community leader.  Earlier this year, CABE requested a male and female from high schools and middle schools. Approximately 412 names from 207 different schools were received. These students were picked from among their peers for exhibiting leadership qualities as defined by a list of criteria developed by a subcommittee of CABE's Board of Directors. Students nominated exhibit the following leadership skills.

  • Willingness to take on challenges
  • Capability to make difficult decisions
  • Concern for others
  • Ability to work with others
  • Willingness to commit to a project
  • Diplomacy
  • Ability to understand issues clearly
  • Ability to honor a commitment

Four students, (2 from KHS, 2 from KIS) received CABE's Student Leadership Award.

From Killingly High School: Bernice Boateng and Cameron Schultz. From Killingly Intermediate School: Faith Boateng-Afranie and Colby Pion
:
5.C. KIS Student -Participation in the MathCON Finals Competition
Rationale:
MathCON is an online math competition for students in grades 5-12 with grade-level specific timed tests.

There are two MathCON rounds:The First round of the competition was held at participating schools and was administered online between January 25 and March 4, 2016.  When the students take the online tests, they are instantly scored and those scores are automatically uploaded. Over 40,000 students participated from 42 different states. KIS seventh grader, Daniel Raheb qualified for the second round.

Qualifying students from each grade levels (Grade 5 through Grade 12) from across the country are invited to the MathCON Finals Second Round which was held in University of Illinois at Chicago on April 23, 2016 for a paper-based test. More than 1,500 people consisting of MathCON finalists, parents, family members, and teachers gathered for an exciting day filled with mathematics.
The test had 50 questions, the maximum weighted score is 300 and questions require ingenuity and insight.

We congratulate Daniel Raheb, who received a Bronze Medal in this prestigious competition.

:
9.A. Healthy Food Certification Statement
Speaker(s):
Kevin Farr
Rationale:
The Board should continue to support participating in the Healthy Food Certification (HFC) program during the 2016-17 school year, pursuant to CGS 10-215f.  Participating will increase the state reimbursement for eligible school breakfasts and lunches (increasing program revenue) while minimally impacting other food-related activities (such as vending machine sales and after school snacks).

The Board has also approved in the past, exemptions that meet the following criteria: "exclude from certification food items that do not meet the Connecticut Nutrition Standards, provided that (1) such food is sold in connection with an event occurring after the end of the regular school day or on the weekend, (2) such sale is at the location of the event, and (3) such food is not sold from a vending machine or school store."  This would allow the sale of food items that do not meet the CT Nutrition Standards, for example, at sporting events, and for fund raising under certain conditions.  We would recommend that the Board approve these exemptions as part of its motion.

:
