Members of the Killingly community are encouraged to share their thoughts with the Board of Education and are invited to do so during this segment of the meeting. When appropriate to do so, members of the Board and the administration may respond to comments. However, in consideration of those in attendance and in an effort to proceed in a timely manner, follow-up discussion may need to take place outside of the meeting setting.

 

Kerri Angelo earned her Master’s Degree in Early Education at Worcester State College and was hired in 1992 as a Head Teacher at Goodyear Early Childhood Center and currently is a dedicated Kindergarten teacher at Killingly Central School and has been an extraordinary elementary teacher since 1992.

Kerri’s has served in many capacities including serving on the KCS School Climate Committee, Kindergarten Liaison for Area Preschools, Kindergarten Data Team Leader, Coordinator of Kindergarten Screening and Math Curriculum Kindergarten Representative.

Kerri as received recognition for being the Employee of the Month in October 2000, November 2002, March 2005 and November 2013.

Kerri focuses on each child’s needs and is one of their biggest advocates. She works closely with parents to help them make the best choices for their children and most importantly refuses to settle for “good enough” for any of her students.

Kerri not only provides authentic experiences for her students, she goes above and beyond for ALL children. Researching and implementing best practices, researching and advocating for full day kindergarten, attending workshops to expand her teaching repertoire and developing formal and informal training for her colleagues; and

THE KILLINGLY BOARD OF EDUCATION publicly recognizes  Kerri for her devotion to her students, their families, the School District, and the community,  and for her excellent teaching skills. Kerri has well-earned the distinction and respect from her students and peers as the 2015 Killingly Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year.

Review of the final spending for the FY 14 year and a look ahead.

The Board of Education will be asked to approve our Evaluation Plan each year at this time.  Edits may take place after conversations with the Professional Development and Evaluation Committee with Board approval as a final step.

The CSDE has approved the plan for the Alliance Grant for the FY15 school year and the Board of Education is asked to approve the budget adjustments made necessary during the final budget vote.

A booklet of data that was examined by administrators at the summer Administrative Institute will be presented to the Board of Education.

Proposed Memorandum of Understanding with Town Council regarding the repair of the HVAC/AC system in the Westfield Ave. building auditorium as well as band and choral rooms and the future use of this Board of Education controlled facility.

Under P.A. 14-172: An Act Concerning Improving Employment Opportunities Through Education and Ensuring Safe School Climates  now requires that the bully's parents or guardians be invited to a meeting, separate from one held with the victim's parents or guardians, to discuss specific interventions the school has undertaken to prevent further bullying.  The revisions to this policy also include revisions as the result of new legislation pertaining to teen dating violence and school safety.

P.A 14-229: An Act Concerning the Expungement of a Pupil's Cumulative Education Record for Certain Expulsions.  This Act make various changes in current law regarding erasure of student expulsion records.  By law, a student's cumulative educational records must include notice of any expulsion and the behavior that caused it.  This Act which revises C.G.S. 10-233d(f), allows local or regional boards of education to erase any expulsion from a student's cumulative educational record, including an expulsion for firearm or deadly weapon possession, if the student's conduct and behavior in later years merits erasure.  The Act does not (1) specify how many years of good conduct merit erasure or (2) define conduct and behavior that merits erasure, leaving those to the board's discretion.  It also requires boards to erase a student's firearm or deadly weapon expulsion record upon high school graduation.   Under current law, erasure upon graduation is not permitted for such expulsions, but it is permitted prior to graduation for students who have (1) never previously been expelled or suspended and (2) completed a board specified program or met board conditions.

P.A. 14-66c: An Act Concerning Youth Athletics and Concussions.  This Act narrows the scope, from concussions and head injuries to just concussions and it also specifies that a concussion is a type of brain injury.  Please refer to the attached three page document on this pervasive 2014 law.
