Rationale:
During the 2012 - 2013 school year, Meg McCullough piloted a class for sixth graders at KIS called 21st Century Skills.  The course address digital literacy, digital (internet) etiquette, digital safety and security, and digital health and wellness.  The curriculum is attached.
The Curriculum subcommittee unanimously voted to recommend that the BOE approve the curriculum as presented.
:
11. Approval and Adoption of new 8th grade Social Studies Textbook
Speaker(s):
Colin McNamara/Richard Murray
Rationale:
The eighth grade social studies teachers have identified a new textbook titled America; History of Our Nation.  This new text would replace the 13 year old text that is currently in use for the class.  The teachers researched a variety of available texts after attending the Connecticut Council for Social Studies Teachers annual conference.
Besides the age of the current text, the new one would have other advantages:
-Covers a time period more specific to the course (1607 - 1870) - current book covers earliest American - to 1990s
-integrates the CCSS
-utilizes a variety of graphs, charts, maps, and primary sources that support the curriculum
The Curriculum subcommittee unanimously voted to recommend that the BOE approve the textbook for adoption.
