10. Irving School Plaque Update
Rationale:
From Jack Walsh
Irving School Edward Nelson Shelton, the Birmingham Borough industrialist, married Miss Mary Jane DeForest of Derby in 1840. They moved into an impressive mansion, named Greystone, built in 1845 on this site by The Hubbell Brothers, from the White Hills area of Shelton. The stone was transported by oxen from Monroe, Connecticut. When the Shelton’s last surviving child passed away in 1933, she left the mansion to her three nieces. In 1941 the property was sold to Mrs. Frances Eliza Osborne Kellogg of Osbornedale Farms, who hoped to preserve the mansion. However, Mrs. Kellogg efforts were unsuccessful, so she donated the property to the city in 1953. The mansion was quickly razed to clear the way for construction of a new school to replace the original Irving School at the corner of Fifth and Olivia Streets. In a contest, the local school children chose to keep the name of the "old" Irving School. In recent times the designation "New" was removed from the school’s name. |
