D.1. Consider City of Smithville Application for Designation of a Historical Marker at Brown Primary School
Description:
Alta Yevett Alexander addressed the Board at the regular March board meeting regarding the Smithville Southside History Project.  This project is being sponsored by the City of Smithville, and the goal of the project includes naming Mary A. Brown school, property of Smithville ISD,  as a historical marker.
The application for historical marker status will initially be submitted to the City of Smihville.  It will be considered by an advisory committee who then recommends action to the City. The City will take action in the form of a resolution.
Note that if the property is declared historic and the District wants to later convey it (sell it or donate it), then the District has to meet additional requirements in order to dispose of the property. Some of those requirements include evaluating the historic significance of the building, any improvements, and the conveyance documents need to include provisions for the preservation of the historic significance. The District may also be subject to local preservation laws and zoning restrictions.
