Description:
The following letter was received from Walter O. Jones dated September 17, 2014 with a request to quote the contents of the letter in the Minutes of the next board meeting. "Visual Arts in the elementary school has been cut repeatedly until students have access of only 30 minutes/week. The secondary has six potter's wheels; the elementary, none.  All of our students should have ample opportunity, during the school day, to engage in as much "art" as they want: performing arts (music, drama), written arts (stories, poetry), visual arts (painting, working with clay, etc.).  There are time/space limitations you say? Then lengthen the school day. Can't do that? Then prioritize.  Working with clay is therapeutic for stressed students. Working in any art form is therapeutic for stressed students, and this school district, with many of its kids coming from families of the working-poor, must offer a welcoming curriculum--something other than high stakes, live-or-die objective testing."
