BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Rick Sansted will share with the board the "206 Points of Pride."  The persons being recognized this month are as follows:

Ten students from the Discovery Middle School Math Team competed in the Chapter MathCounts Competition at MSUM in Moorhead. Out of 91 total students competing, we had 5 students finish in the top 10. Those students include:
  • 1st place: Emelia Preston, who also won the Countdown Round
  • 4th place: PJ Vanderheiden
  • 6th place: Ada Dahlseng
  • 8th place: Emily Cass
  • 10th place: Joni Vanderheiden
  • 12th place: Harrison Bedford
  • 14th place: Colin Yavarow
  • 16th place: Ben Kolb
  • 26th place: Alex Koetter
  • 53rd place: Cash Hanson

The team of Alex Koetter, Emelia Preston, Joni Vanderheiden and PJ Vanderheiden also took first place in the team competition and will be competing in the State MathCounts Competition.

Seniors Ellie Sticha and Lars Dahl were awarded the Triple ‘A’ Award for Alexandria Area High School. The Academics, Arts and Athletics Award, commonly known as the Triple ‘A’ Award, honors high school seniors who have a 3.0 or higher grade point average and who participate in League-sponsored athletic and fine arts activities. Each region selects one male and one female winner to move on to the State competition where the winners will receive a four-year, $1,000 scholarship.

The AAHS Math Team took home the title of 2026 West Central Division Champions. Congratulations to team members Lars Dahl, Zack Frisell, Emma Hawkins, Lucas Klimek, Alex Lin, Joshua Makalinao, Brandon Malo, Dominic Maus, Wendy Munoz Cortes, Alondra Munoz Cortes, Colton Nolden, Levi Preston, Alex Rodriguez, William Wagner and Michael Zhang.

A number of Discovery Middle School students had art projects selected to be displayed for the Dream Big! art show at Gallery 300 at Alexandria College. Students include:
  • Grade 7: Madeline Alderson, Hazel Eken, Kilee Arvidson, Ainslee Erickson, Evelyn Hoemberg, Elizabeth Evans, Kennedi Hay, Harper Linow, Maci Schmidt, Lucas Dropik, Ella Howard, Nakiera Hopp, Charlotte Blake and Parker Schuette
  • Grade 8: Emery Pasague, Emily Cass, Ava Gayle, Madison Nelson, Addison Larson, Jasmine Bergs, Peter Wacek, Annabelle Trunnell, Maddison Poepping, Addy Frey, Gracyn Day, Aaliyah Ruffin, Savannah Keehr, Layla Donaldson, Skylar Johnson and Ethan Klimek

AAHS had a number of musicians named All-Conference musicians. These students will participate in a day of rehearsal and another day of performance along with student musicians from across the state. Students include:

Athletes recognized this past month as Central Lakes Conference Performers of the Week in their respective sport include:
  • Kyler Kavanagh - Boys Swim & Dive: he is undefeated in diving & placed 1st in all CLC meets
  • Victoria Meyers - Girls Hockey: with 2 wins and a tie vs. Moorhead and Bemidji, she was a brick wall
  • Andy Wacek - Boys Swim & Dive: won the 50 & 500 Free at Detroit Lakes and won the 50 and 100 Breast vs. Sauk Centre/Melrose
  • McKinley Hoelscher - Girls Basketball: in two games, scored 37 points, had 9 rebounds, 3 assists and made 12 out of 14 free throws

The AAHS Mock Trial Team of Francis Ampaso, Leah Brittain, Mae Denne, Mara Duscher, Madison Harrison, Emma Hefley, Gabrielle Johnson, Alaina Kosin, Sophia Nohre, Jadalynn Posephny, Alice Novotny, Ella Vanderheiden and Echo Fiecke earned a trip to the State Mock Trial Competition.

Kira Johnson earned another trip to the State Gymnastics Meet in individual competition.

Head Gymnastics Coach Hannah Stevenson and Assistant Coach Nichole Boyden were recognized as the 2026 Section 8AA Head Coach & Assistant Coach of the Year.

The Discovery Middle School Nordic Ski Team finished their season at Junior High Champions with outstanding performances. Emelia Preston took 1st place in all of her races over the course of the season.

AAHS Nordic Ski sent three competitors to the State Nordi Ski Competition:
  • Joren Dahl placed 31st in Pursuit in the Boys Competition
  • Brinkly Schmid placed 39th in Pursuit in the Girls Competition
  • Mila Warzecha placed 70th in Pursuit in the Girls Competition

Micah Kietzmann broke the Sauk Centre pool record with a lifetime best time to win the 100 Butterfly in a meet vs. Melrose Area High School.

In wrestling, Nolan Fettig recorded his 166th career victory, tying the Alexandria all-time career wins record previously held by John Amundson since 2008.

First Lego League teams competed at Regionals with phenomenal results:
  • Team 46828 "Lego Masters in an Ancient Viking Ship" won the Innovation Project Award and advanced to State, where they brought home a trophy for the second highest robot performance score and the highest mission merge score. Team members include Sully Golberg (DMS), Erik Eigen (Lincoln), Harper Hindt (Miltona), Skylar Hitch (Miltona), Naomi Luedeke (Miltona), Riaden Luedeke (Miltona), Ian Momsen (Miltona), Everest Patterson (Miltona) and Whittier Patterson (Miltona).
  • Team 43037 "Terra Tech Titans" won the Engineering Excellence Award. Team members include Joe Heyn (Carlos), Noah Johnson (Voyager), Waylon Lang (Woodland), Langston Messer (Voyager), Felix Ruprecht (Miltona) and Emmett Walker (St. Marys).
  • Team 46827 "Ancient VII" won the Motivate Award. Team members include Hyrum Bernards (Woodland), Colin Binger (Lincoln), August Grey (Voyager), Abigail Kolb (Woodland), Margaret Kolb (Woodland), Blake Moening (Carlos), Leo Smith (Miltona) and Weston Uselman (Lincoln).

Personnel recommendations are made monthly. The conditional offers of employment are subject to successful completion of a criminal background check and I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification, and where applicable, the issuance of the required license.

A proposed three-year contract has been negotiated between the school district and the superintendent, Rick Sansted.

The proposed contract covers the time period of July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2029.


RECOMMENDATION:

The administration recommends the board approve the contract with the superintendent for July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2029.

IV.F. APPROVE SUBMISSION OF GRANT APPLICATIONS

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The administration recommends that the school board approve the submission of the following:
 
  • Grant application to the National Fluid Power Association for $435 to support the development of hands-on fluid power projects and bring opportunities to DMS science activities.
  • Grant application to the CTE Consortium - Lakes Country Service Cooperative for $3,500 to assist in the purchase of a washer and dryer for the Transition Center.
  • Grant application to the Douglas County Children’s Mental Health Collaborative for $15,000 to assist with start-up costs to open a business to provide competitive employment for adults with disabilities and/or mental health needs.
  • Grant application to the Douglas County Children’s Mental Health Collaborative for $31,550 to support HOSA members in proactively addressing mental health needs of the youth in the county through a community-wide education and prevention campaign.
  • Grant application to the Douglas County Children’s Mental Health Collaborative for $3,000 to provide clinical consultation for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 school years.
  • Grant application to the Douglas County Children’s Mental Health Collaborative for $40,000 ($20,000 per year for 2025 and 2026) to support the Summer Challenge program.
  • Grant application to the Douglas County Children’s Mental Health Collaborative for $40,000 to partner with Douglas County Human Services to engage families in school and increase access to community supports to meet family needs.
  • Grant application to the CTE Consortium - Lakes County Service Cooperative for $5,000 to fund three truck simulators to be used in the Heavy Equipment class as students seek their CDL Certification.
  • Grant application to the MN Department of Education for $300,000 to fund a full-time Community School Site Coordinator to strengthen how schools support the whole student.
  • Grant application to Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies to World Savvy for $105,000 to provide multi-year support in equipping young people with the skills, mindsets and adaptability they need to thrive in a dynamic, interconnected world.
  • Grant application to the Alexandria Education Foundation for $1,200 to provide adequate tables, chairs and Spanish books for classrooms.
  • Grant application to United Way Lakes & Prairies for $20,000 to help pay for preschool fees for qualifying families.
  • Grant application to United Way Lakes & Prairies for $7,700 to address the three greatest barriers for adult learners in our area: GED Testing Scholarships, Transportation to and from ABE and Technology to use while working on education and career goals.

RECOMMENDATION:

The administration recommends the school board approve the resolution to submit the grant applications and donation requests.

IV.G. ADOPT RESOLUTION TO ACCEPT DONATIONS AND GRANTS

As per district policy, the board is required to approve the submission and acceptance of donations and grants to the district that exceed $1,000.

The administration recommends the school board approve the attached resolution accepting grants and donations to the school district.

As per district policy, the board is required to approve all extended field trips that involve one or more overnight stays.


RECOMMENDATION:

The administration recommends that the school board approve the following extended field trips:
  • The Garfield 5th Grade students are requesting permission to travel to Deep Portage Learning Center in Hackensack, MN on March 18-20, 2026 to participate in classes related to science and social studies.
  • The Mock Trial team is requesting permission to travel to St. Paul, MN on March 5-6, 2026 to compete in the State Mock Trial Competition.
  • The Robotics Team is requesting permission to travel to Tulsa, OK on March 21 - April 6, 2026 to participate in the Green Country Robotics Regional competition.

  • CAPS Human Services students will host the 14th Annual Empty Bowls Project on March 19th to raise awareness of food insecurity in our region and raise funds for the Outreach Food Shelf, AAHS and DMS Food Shelves and Backpack Attack.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The following pages provide the application the school district is required to submit to the Minnesota Department of Education per Minnesota Statute 124D.12.  Rick Sansted, Superintendent, will provide additional background information regarding the application process.

The administration recommends the board approve the submission of the Flexible Learning Year Application to the Minnesota Department of Education.

VI.C. ADOPT AMERICAN INDIAN PARENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE RESOLUTION

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Minnesota Statutes, section 124D.78 requires that all Minnesota school districts with ten or more American Indian students have an American Indian Parent Advisory Committee.  The committee serves in an advisory role to the district.  The school board must ensure that programs are planned, operated and evaluated in consultation with the committee.  The district must complete the Resolution of concurrence/non-concurrence each school year. 


RECOMMENDATION:

The administration recommends the board adopt the American Indian Parent Advisory Committee Resolution as presented.

VI.D. ADOPT SCHOOL CALENDARS FOR 2026-2027 AND 2027-2028

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Trish Perry will review with the board the proposed school calendars for the next two years, 2026-2027 and 2027-2028. The calendar committee, composed of representatives from the teaching staff, parents and administration, held several meetings over the past weeks.


RECOMMENDATION:

The administration recommends the board adopt the 2026-2027 and 2027-2028 school calendars.

VI.E. APPROVE MASTER AGREEMENT

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

A tentative settlement was reached between the District and Education Minnesota Alexandria (EMA).  EMA membership approved the new master agreement.

Jessie Hjelle, Director of Human Resources, will provide an overview of the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 Master Agreement.  The administration and the Personnel/Negotiations Committee reviewed and are in support of the approval of the agreement.


RECOMMENDATION:

The administration recommends approval of the Master Agreement between Education Minnesota Alexandria and Alexandria School District for the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 school years.
