Description:
We are into November, and this past week all buildings had Parent-Teacher Conferences, which is a great way to connect with parents, celebrate the accomplishments of our students, and discuss ways for continued improvement. One area that we are starting to have more conversation about is our elementary configuration. The issue we are seeing across all of our elementary buildings is fluctuations in enrollment that are specific to a handful of grades. For example, at Roosevelt, we currently have three sections of each grade, except second grade has only enough students for two sections. As this two-section group moves through the system, it causes an issue with staffing each year. We have five situations like this across our elementary buildings, and it appears that this could be an issue moving forward. We are looking to engage with a consultant to work through this issue and better understand the many considerations that are involved, including the perspectives of staff, families, and students, regarding any change that might help solve this issue. This is a complicated situation, and we want to work with all stakeholders through the process. Safety planning continues to be an important part of our work. A team from Lakeshore participated in a FEMA exercise with law enforcement and focused on emergency planning related to the Cook Nuclear Plant. It was a valuable opportunity to better understand the coordination and procedures involved in a significant emergency, and FEMA representatives were very complimentary of our team’s organization and attention to detail. We have also arranged for local law enforcement to provide Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management training for our staff in mid-November. Working through tabletop exercises together will help strengthen our team’s use of the threat assessment process. I am pleased to share that the fall Lakeshore Light has been completed and sent to the printer. We worked with Berrien RESA on the design and organization, and the process went very well. Thank you to everyone who contributed and helped us meet the deadlines. The Lakeshore Excellence Foundation hosted a successful event at Watermark to introduce more community members to the Lancer Leaders program. The event received positive local news coverage and was another reminder of the support we have throughout the Lakeshore community. Recently, the LEF committed $750,000 to four major projects that will positively impact our District and community. We are grateful for the support of our community! And finally, Breakfast with the Board begins this Friday at Roosevelt. The Board will make similar visits to our other buildings throughout the year. I appreciate our Board members making time to connect with staff and hear directly about the work taking place in our schools. There is a lot of thoughtful work happening across the District, and I appreciate the time and care our staff brings to it. As we work through both the opportunities and the questions ahead, our focus remains on supporting our students and providing a strong experience for Lakeshore families. |

The Community Connections Committee met on October 13th. Present at the meeting were Rachel Wade, Jessica Bigley, Susan Toothman, Greg Eding, and Scott Allan. Mrs. Toothman led the discussion on the Staff Wellness Weeks activities, which included daily activities focused on staff wellness. October is also National Principal’s Month, and Mrs. Toothman engaged with our principals to learn their "most used phrase" and what they would consider to be their "theme song". We also reviewed the social media posts and accompanying statistics. Furthermore, the committee discussed the goal of creating more community partnerships, which will be the focus in future committee meetings.

Description:
The Student Success Committee met on October 27th. Present at the meeting were Bill Scaletta, Natalie Macerata, Jeron Blood, Greg Eding, and Jessica Bigley. The committee spent some time discussing their shared reading of the first chapter of "Leveled Reading, Leveled Lives" by Timothy Shanahan. The book examines the history of literacy in our country, and goes through the importance of having a reading curriculum that is grounded in scientific data. The reading helped us understand the importance of our newly established reading intervention program and the positive impact it’s having on our students. Mrs. Macerata also discussed curriculum pilots that are happening with high school math and middle school reading. Natalie explained that she will be presenting a look at our District data at November’s Board meeting.

VIII.C. Facilities & Finance Comm.
| Presenter: |
Lori VonKoenig
Description:
The Facilities and Finance Committee, consisting of Griffin Ott, Tracy Althouse, Greg Eding, and Lori VonKoenig, met on November 3rd. Also in attendance were Matt Kelly and Brenna Musser from Plante Moran, as well as Mackenzie Flynn from Thrun Law Firm. Matt and Brenna presented our audited financial statements, and Mr. Kelly will be presenting a summary of the audit at the Board meeting. Ms. Flynn joined us to discuss 31aa funding and went through the changes to section 31aa of the State Aid Act from last year. For the 2026-27 school year, the mental health allocation is being split from the school safety allocation, allowing Districts to accept the funding separately. With no conditions placed on the mental health allocation, the committee did not see any issue with moving forward with the acceptance of these funds. However, the school safety allocation, although modified from last year, continues to have strings attached that could be problematic for the District and will need more discussion with the full Board in a future Board meeting.
Tracy presented the monthly financials, which included the District’s investment schedule, cash flows through our fiscal year-end, October cash receipts and expenditures, sinking fund and bond summaries, as well as custodial account balances and LEF grant balances. Nothing of concern was noted. |

IX.B. Relinquish Federal Funds
| Presenter: |
Greg Eding
Description:
The District will relinquish its Title III, Part A - English Learner federal funds for this fiscal year rather than applying directly or joining a consortium. Due to the small grant allocation, the administrative overhead and compliance requirements necessary to manage the funds would cost the District more than the grant provides.
