Discussion:  A Study Session of the Board of Education came to order at 9:25 pm at the call of Chair Lowery.  This meeting was held virtually due to Covid-19 and streamed live at:

Nichole Berg shared an overview of the Climate Change Climate Justice Program at Portland Public Schools and stated the department’s commitment to the district’s Core Values and Equity.  She introduced the climate change and climate justice elective. She showed a video of students who worked to help create the climate change / justice curriculum. She introduced a sample lesson and went through the lesson with the board. The board asked questions about the curriculum. Ms. Berg shared that there are currently six pilot schools with the elective this year with the hope to expand the course to each high school, and eventually create coursework that spans each grade. She noted that the class can be taken for science credit recover, though student’s do not receive a traditional science credit for the course. The Board provided feedback on the format of the study session. Chair Lowery stated a study session is scheduled after every second regular board meeting of the month.
