Description:
On Veterans Day, Doug Cannon a retired educator who worked in the Davis School District for 34 years as a teacher and administrator, was giving a presentation to students in his daughter’s classroom and unexpectedly collapsed. It was apparent to his wife and daughter that this was a medical emergency. In desperation, Doug’s wife asked if anyone knew CPR. Without hesitation, Meghan Herbst and Allyssa Anderson immediately came forward. Both of these 9th grade students had learned CPR the previous year in their health class. Before any emergency response to the classroom, these two students heroically began to administer CPR.
Megan began compressions and Allyssa counted out the cadence for those compressions. When the office staff arrived they offered to take over but these two girls stoically reassured them that they were fine. Their cadence and compressions were textbook and they continued on for several minutes until emergency personnel arrived and relieved them. Tragically, Doug passed away, but the family wanted to let all know they consider it a blessing that Doug passed on Veteran’s Day, as it was one of his favorite days, and he died doing what he loved and surrounded by those whom he loved. The family was also super grateful for the heroic intervention of Megan and Alyssa. They marveled at the composure and strength exhibited by these young ladies in a time of great duress. We would like to recognize them for their helping hands, courage, and outstanding performance of CPR in a very difficult situation. They are remarkable young ladies and have a very bright future in whatever they decide to pursue. |
