5.a. Bid Approval for KHS Core Switches and Access Switches
Speaker(s):
Walter Barnes, Technology Supervisor and Krista Cowley, Chief Financial Officer
Description:
Tech Services is looking for approval to accept the following bids for
E-Rate 470 forms 260021584 KHS Core switches and 260021586 KHS Access switches. Submittal of a 471 form for each 470 request will accept the bid in the USAC portal and we will wait for a Funding Commitment Decision Letter (FCDL) from USAC before we can move forward with the purchase. The core switches at KHS are the primary network devices that connect the KHS, KMS, and Elementary School networks to the internet. Support for the current switches at KHS has reached end-oflife and can no longer get any security updates. We recommend that these switches are replaced to ensure the secure operation of our school networks with up-to-date hardware and software. The access switches at KHS are over 10 years old, and there have been higher power requirements for attached devices than when the building was reopened. These switches will reach end-of-life in October of 2026, although these devices are less vulnerable than the core switches. We have encountered several instances where expansion of surveillance cameras or other Power-over-Ethernet devices would cause the switches currently installed at KHS to restart attached VOIP (voice over IP) phones at random intervals. The switches quoted for Form 470 260021586 have a higher power delivery capacity, and we expect more reliable access to devices that receive power over the network. |
