Public Content:  MHIT Grant Update: The 2026-2027 school year marks the fourth year of the Mental Health Intervention Team (MHIT) grant. USD 244 has been awarded $18,990 for 2026-2027, compared with $57,826.20 last year.
In the spring, the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS) notified districts that, due to legislative changes and reduced funding, districts would be responsible for 75% of their MHIT program costs. Following this announcement, many districts chose to reduce or discontinue their MHIT programming. In response, USD 244 reduced its program from a full-time to a half-time position.
After grant applications were submitted, KDADS announced that its funding contribution would remain substantially the same as in previous years. KDADS will fund 65% of the program, with USD 244 responsible for the remaining 35%. The district’s obligation for the 2026-2027 fiscal year is $6,646.50.
Historical Information: KDADS assumed administration of the MHIT grant from the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) beginning with the 2024-2025 school year. At that time, the required district contribution toward the school liaison’s salary and benefits increased from 25% to 35%.
For the 2024-2025 school year, CrossWinds agreed to reimburse USD 244 for the additional 10% contribution. CrossWinds continued this funding arrangement for 2025-2026 and has agreed to maintain it for the 2026-2027 school year.

Public Content:  The Board of Education wishes to be responsive to the community and welcomes patrons at all meetings.  Requests to speak may be made when the board president asks if any visitors have items to bring to the attention of the board. Speakers are asked to limit their remarks to five (5) minutes or less and groups with the same special interest may be asked to appoint a spokesperson.

Public Content:  During this item, the board may choose to adopt the budget and levy as presented or may elect to amend the budget. Should the board elect to amend the budget, no individual fund budgets may be increased beyond the amount that was published in the public notice.

While some discussion by the board concerning the budget may occur under this item, the time for major discussion and the public hearing is scheduled during the budget hearing. It is recommended that this item on the agenda be reserved for board discussion and action with regard to the 2026-2027 budget.

Public Content:  We are providing Building Needs Assessments as well as State Assessment Results in order to adopt our budget for the 2026-2027 school year. Building Needs Assessments were reviewed in the creation of our budget and are attached below.  State Assessments are reviewed in our Result reports throughout the year.  Since we have a process in place to review State Assessments, we will not be including those in-depth results at this time. Both the building needs assessments and state assessments were discussed and evaluated in the budget approval process.  

The Board also receives staff input at Certified Teacher Linkage meetings in April of each year. Recommendations from staff members are considered carefully by the Board of Education and Administration. 
Recommendations include additional staff, as well as other student improvement programming. 

Public Content:  Results policy R-1 deals with the board’s expectations of students concerning academic skills.  The indicators for measuring progress toward meeting this end are noted in colored font.  This policy and indicators state:

To ensure academic success of our students, students must take responsibility for their own learning, evaluate personal progress toward learning goals, effectively solve problems, and apply academic knowledge to practical situations.

The administrative team will present information to the board concerning our current status in the above area.  Their presentation will include results from the state assessments of reading, writing and communication achievement and the ACT test at BHS.
