9. BOARD OF STARS
Description:
Doug Penn
Thank you for taking the time to do game days with our FOCUS students. You are by far the best game instruction teacher ever. We know you are busy and taking time to have fun with our students while working on communication, team work, and strategy is very much appreciated. Recognized by: Shannon O'Brien Victor Shen Victor has a passion for the outdoors and building the community and has been working tirelessly to create opportunities for our students, families and community members. He collaborated with the City of Whittier and KMTA to get grant money to purchase outdoor equipment and Whittier School now has XC skis, snow shoes and kick sleds for recreating here in Whittier and also in Portage Valley. It has been exciting to see students and their families get outside and enjoy playing outside. Thank you for making this happen, Victor! Recognized by Anna Dickason Christian Kompkoff The Tatitlek teachers would like to nominate a community member/parent, Christian Kompkoff, in Tatitlek for the Board of Stars. During our long winter months, Christian always makes it a priority to make sure the school, shop, and teacher's housing are plowed and taken care of for each and every snowfall we have. If it’s icy, he makes sure that it is graveled as well. It doesn’t matter what day of the week or time of the day, he makes sure it’s always taken care of. Christian is always looking out for the safety of our students and staff on a regular basis. We appreciate his efforts! Recognized by: Nichole Palmer and Tatitlek Teachers Melonie Kashevarof Melonie has shown exceptional leadership by working together with the Head Teacher scheduling EAC meetings, conducting meetings and following through of planned activities for the school. Melonie has shown willingness to always put forth the work needed and that EAC members are welcomed and appreciated for their interest in the school, student success, and community participation. Thank you Melonie for always stepping up. We are lucky to have you! Recognized by: Gail Evanoff, CSD Schoolboard Vice Chair and Chenega Elder Nick Swain A huge shout out to Nick who has taken over kids' gym for us. Our students and our community value kids' gym as a time to get kids active, so we are very grateful for Nick stepping in to make sure this valuable time is available for kids each week. Recognized by: Whittier School Staff KMTA We'd like to thank Josh and Sarah for coming to Whittier each Friday in January to teach kids about the science of snow and incorporate that with fun outdoor activities. Josh and Sara also worked with Mr. Victor to provide wildly popular outdoor opportunities after school on the days of their visits. We are grateful for your partnership, KMTA! Recognized by: Whittier School Staff Whittier Fire Department We'd like to thank the Whittier Fire Department for their hard work and spirit of volunteerism in our community. WFD volunteered to cook the meat and sides for us for the holiday program in December and deliver it in a howling wind. We appreciate your kindness and support! Recognized by: Whittier School Staff Joey Cross Joey has done an amazing job as Chenega’s Native Youth Olympics coach. He works regularly with all ages of students and has really done a wonderful job in growing our younger students into NYO athletes. Joey is encouraging, nurturing, and always brings a positive attitude to motivate his team to push themselves to do their very best. Thank you Joey!!! This is a wonderful thing that you do for Chenega’s students. Recognized by: Mr. Penn Victor Shen Victor continues to do a fantastic job in providing Whittier students the opportunity to get outside. We know how important exercise and being outdoors is to both physical and mental health and Whittier can be a difficult place to get motivated to get outside, particularly in winter. Victor continues to offer lots of really fun and engaging ways for students to play in the outdoors through field trips, partnerships with non-profits, and working together with the City of Whittier. Thank you very, very much Victor! This is not easy work and your efforts really do provide and amazing asset for Whittier students. And it is SO FUN to see the students smiling and laughing as they fly down the snow on sleds :) Recognized by: Doug Penn Andrea Korbe Andrea willingly gave her time to lead a professional development opportunity for Chugach teachers about DIBELS and the AK Reads Act requirements. Thanks, Andrea! Recognized by: Stephanie Burgoon |
