9. BOARD OF STARS
Description:
To: Outdoor Leadership Trip Staff - Natalie Oberman, Mike Briseno and Kevin Enriquez From: Ty Mase Watching this team nail down the logistics of the New Mexico bike trip was an impressive experience. The planning that goes into making these types of trips happen is immense and I am glad that we have folks willing to go the extra mile so that our students can have these rich experiences! Thanks ODL Team! To: Whittier Teachers (Jane Alzner, Tim Bloodgood, John Hale, Andrea Korbe, Rachel Patton) From: Stephanie Burgoon Whittier's cook resigned on short notice in January, and since then Whittier teachers have been volunteering their time to provide hot, nutritious breakfasts for students every day. This helps students start the day with full stomachs and ready to learn. Thanks for going above and beyond to meet student needs! To: Victor Shen From: Stephanie Burgoon A Voyage student was injured on the Outdoor Leadership Trip. Victor left immediately to fly to El Paso, pick up the student, attend to her medical needs, and fly back to Alaska with her. Thanks, Victor, for taking such great care of our Voyage student! To: Nick Swain From: Wayne Shen Thank you Nick for coaching basketball to the Whittier kids. It has been wonderful to hear laughter, cheering and balls bouncing again in the gym! The kids always look forward to practice to improve and have fun. During practice, Nick makes sure the team is running hard, being challenged, learning basketball skills, and having fun. What seems almost all the time, the kids respond positively with 100% effort. And that is no easy task for a coach to get that kind of effort from young basketball players. That is all thanks to Nick's enthusiasm, energy, and patience. Nick not only relies on his natural abilities, but challenges himself to be a better coach. With a keen eye, Nick is able to quickly identify the kids' strengths and weaknesses. Then he makes adjustments to improve the next practices. When he sees the team make a mistake, he'll take the extra effort to explain. If he feels the explanation was insufficient for the team, he'll re-explain or demonstrate with a better approach during the next teaching moment. From my observation, it almost seems Nick finds more joy in coaching than actually playing. Good job Coach Nick on a great basketball season! Go Eagles! To: Cassie Huang From: Stephanie Burgoon Whittier high school students are studying World History. During their study of China, Cassie presented information about the culture, landmarks, history, and foods of China. Thanks you, Cassie, for teaching Whittier high school students about China! To: Officer Butler and Officer Sargeant, Anchorage Police Department From: Stephanie Burgoon School Resource Officers Butler and Sargeant visited Whittier School to speak with students about careers in law enforcement and a day in the life of a police officer. Thank you, Officer Butler and Officer Sargeant, for visiting with Whittier students! |
