11.1. Request for waiver of a portion of Policy 6141.328 BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)- First Reading*
Presenter:
Dr. Richard Gagliardi
Rationale:
Staff at Northeast Middle School are requesting a Bring Your Own Technology pilot to benefit all instructional programs grades 6-8. As part of this pilot, students will be allowed to bring their own technology devices to school and use them in the classroom as part of the teaching and learning process. The goal of this pilot is to expand student access to technology for learning and enable them to use technology tools to understand content, add meaning to their learning, solve real-world problems, conduct research, collaborate with peers, and actively engage in learning. In order to allow students to use their own technology as part of this pilot program, we are requesting that the Board waive a specific section of the current policy #6141.328. The portion of the policy to be waived is: The use of technology to provide educational material is a privilege at school that we wish all students to have beginning in grade nine (9). This BYOD pilot would be in place for the remainder of the 15-16 school year. In June of 2016, a written report highlighting the lessons learned from this pilot will be will be presented to the Board along with any necessary policy recommendations.
