May 23, 2018 at 7:00 PM - Regular Board of Education Meeting

Rationale: 

Members of the Killingly community are encouraged to share their thoughts with the Board of Education and are invited to do so during this segment of the meeting. When appropriate to do so, members of the Board and the administration may respond to comments. However, in consideration of those in attendance and in an effort to proceed in a timely manner, follow-up discussion may need to take place outside of the meeting setting.

 

Rationale: 

Our KHS Music department represented Killingly with immense pride and musical excellence at the Music in the Parks Festival in Hershey Park. In total, 141 students participated, accompanied by chaperones, nurses, truck drivers, and directors. Killingly High School  had 6 performing ensembles compete in the Music in the Parks Festival at Hershey Park. There were various ensembles from 7 different schools from around the country. Here’s the results for Killingly High School:

1st place superior rating for KHS Concert Choir
1st place superior rating for KHS Chamber Choir with a score of 97.5 out of 100!
1st place excellent rating for KHS Jazz Band
1st place superior rating for KHS Symphonic Band
1st place superior rating for KHS Percussion Ensemble B3
2nd place superior rating for KHS Percussion Ensemble B1
Outstanding vocal soloist in entire competition: Nazmia Dionis
Best overall concert band in competition: KHS Symphonic Band
Best overall jazz band in competition: KHS Jazz Band

It was truly amazing and inspiring to see the KHS musicians in action. They were focused, expressive, energized and determined to be amazing. And they were! This is an incredible result for a school. It is very difficult to receive even 1 superior rating in competition - our students earned 5!!!!

We have never traveled with so many performing ensembles and earned such tremendous ratings. Maybe even more importantly was how KHS students and adults carried themselves off the stage. They were respectful, patient, kind, and delightful for the whole trip! Countless compliments  were received about our students at the hotel, from the bus drivers, the festival staff, and staff and security at the Hershey Theater. They were a joy in every way! At least 4 adults stated that in their 30 year’s of being involved in events like this with teenagers, they have never seen a better group of young adults. It was especially nice to see the students supporting one another and unite as one - extremely powerful!

Rationale:  The Killingly Central School would like to donate new Killingly Central School sign at the base of the hill.  The stone is being donated by Mr. Warner, place of employment, Sansoucy Quarries and it is a 5’ x 3’ stone.  They are not sure what type yet and will let us know when they find the size they are looking for.  The engraving would be done by Mercer Monuments in Plainfield (that is the place Sansoucy Quarries goes through).  The lettering for "Killingly Central School" would be in 4” letters on both sides of the stone and PTO has agreed via vote last meeting that we would pay the $730 for the engraving as well as for posts which are $100 (for 8x4x4) and $150 (8x6x6).  Mrs. Cara Warner said the quote could go up a little if we use a hard stone as it is harder to engrave.  They also have an option for a stone base.

Rationale: 

The End of Year Celebration will be held on Monday, June 19  from 3:00-5:30 p.m.

The event will take place at the Connecticut National Golf Course on Chase Rd., East Putnam CT.

In order to plan accordingly for hors d'oeuvres and appetizers, please let us know if you plan on attending by June 14th.
