Rationale:
End of Year Activities Dr. Carver will provide a summary of end of year activities as a result of the pandemic. Donation Residents, businesses, and other organizations around Connecticut continue responding to the Governor's request for donations of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The Bethel Public Schools donated: Nitrile gloves, earloop masks, disinfectant wipes, N95 masks, oral thermometers, oral thermometer covers, Braun Tremoscan PC200s. We maintained a supply internally and will make them available to local EMS if needed. Distance Learning
We are on Day 4 of Distance Learning. In general, things are going well. We are still trying to ensure that everyone has the technology and troubleshoot issues. I believe we are at the end of most of the major issues. We do have a few families who have no Internet access and did not let us know until we reached out because students are not completing their assignments. We are working with them to get access. In some cases, we will be providing "hot spots". We have created a resource page for parents on digital issues and are looking to establish a blog in which parents could ask questions/get answers.
Feeding Program
In general is going very well. Last week we were serving just over 500 meals a day. This week it has consistently been over 1000. I personally was at one of the distributions this week. I have no doubt that the families who need the meals are getting it. Amanda Riley and her team are doing a great job. They have come up with a way to troubleshoot issues and streamline the process to make it move quicker and maintain appropriate social distancing.
Transportation Contract
As discussed at our last BOE meeting, we sent the attached letter to First Student. As discussed, likely we will come to a negotiated settlement. CAPSS also provided districts (from Shipman and Goodwin) guidance (attached) regarding transportation which could also be applied in other contracts. The BOE has received a letter from their union, which we will place under correspondence in the next regular Board of Education Meeting.
Calendar
The revised calendar was sent to parents. The April break was modified to April 10th (Good Friday) and 13th (Monday after Easter). Last day of school is June 16th (180 school days).
SDE Guidance
The SDE sent guidance this week on Special Education and Evaluation of Certified Staff. I would say the guidance on Special Education was positive in terms of compensatory services. The guidance acknowledges that the services will not be the same and districts should be providing them to the greatest extent possible.
