New Courses: English Senior Electives

Summary of the Briefing:
The Bethel High School English Department is bringing forward 6 new English Senior elective 
courses to  replace the  senior  Digital English course. These  courses include:
• Advanced Writing
• Gender Studies
• Out with the Old, In with the New
• The Creative Process
• Science Fiction
• Sports Literature: Profiles in Leadership, Perseverance, and Diversity

Using our 1:1 model, these courses will create opportunities that provide more choice and
personalization for our students which aligns to our district's Strategic Plan. If approved, each
of the courses will be:
• One semester in length offered to our seniors
• Fully aligned to the Common Core State Standards
• Aligned to one/several Pathways (existing Pathways:  Education,  Global Studies and proposed
Pathways: Career & Technical Readiness, Business, and Healthcare)
• Connected to the Global Competencies (Critical Thinking, Collaboration, and Creativity and
Innovation) to ensure our students are College and Career Ready

No additional staff members are needed to teach these courses. Funding will include summer
curriculum work, College Board training for the Advanced Writing course, and instructional
resources that both the school and the Assistant Superintendent's office
