V. ITEMS FOR ACTION
|
V.1. Approval of Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Launch
Description:
In 2011 Cummins and MPHS partnered to deliver PLTW at the high school introducing the courses of Introduction to Engineering Design and Principles of Engineering. In 2013 Mineral Point was selected as one of 44 schools in the country to pilot PLTW Launch for grades K-5, a program that remains in existence to date. In 2015, Mineral Point wrote a grant to implement PLTW Gateway in the Middle School. The gift was not awarded.
The strategic plan has a focus area of technology integration with an action plan to offer PLTW Gateway at the Middle School as part of an overall expansion of PLTW. Mineral Point conducted a site visit to Darlington Schools and learned that PLTW Launch courses are already being offered in their middle school. If approved, the Launch program would be provided during grades 6, 7, and 8 Encore periods or opposite physical education every other day. Kyle Carey recommended the district reach out to retiring Platteville HS teacher, Chuck Smet. Chuck is certified to teach all courses in PLTW Launch and wishes to continue teaching, but not full time. Chuck would welcome the opportunity to teach .50 FTE at Mineral Point Middle School and as a retired teacher would not require benefits of any kind. The District recommends contracting for services with Chuck Smet for $5,000 quarterly to provide six additional PLTW Launch courses (2 per grade level).
