5. Junior High Wrestling
Description:
BACKGROUND: CPS last had junior wrestling in the 2012-13 season. In 2011-12 (the last time we had high school wrestling prior to this season), we had four high school wrestlers and six junior high wrestlers, and the program diminished due to lack of participation. This season, we had 15 high school wrestlers with one qualifying for the MHSAA State Finals. Five high school wrestlers earned Honorable Mention recognition from the Southwest 10 Conference, and the excitement is back in the wrestling program. At the junior high level, the sports are aligned for a four-season year. Currently, we have a void area for boys between basketball and track during the months of January and February, while the junior high girls play basketball. The current 6th- and 7th-grade classes each have 37 boys, which is the highest number of boys per grade in grades 1st-8th. RECOMMENDATION: It is the recommendation of the athletic department that junior high wrestling be reinstated to mirror the other sports which have feeder programs leading into high school. This will give junior high students an opportunity to wrestle, and begin learning fundamentals while representing their school. The proposed posting for a junior high wrestling coach is attached. MOTION BY _____________________________; SECONDED BY _______________________ BE IT RESOLVED that the Centreville Board of Education approve / not approve reinstating wrestling at the junior high level. ROLL CALL / VOICE VOTE: AYES: BOWEN, DETWEILER, EASH, MILLER, REED, TROYER, WALTON NAYS: BOWEN, DETWEILER, EASH, MILLER, REED, TROYER, WALTON MOTION CARRIED / DEFEATED
