5.a. Superintendent's Report

Description: 
  1. The 2021 MSBA Leadership Conference will be virtual.  The conference will be mornings of January 14, 21, 28.  I encourage school board members to participate.  I will forward the registration information when I receive it.
  2. Nick Thoms, Ashley Black, and Mike Slater have completed the local school board member orientation.  They are also completing the MSBA Phase I & II trainings for new school board members.  Their first school board meeting will be on January 13th
  3. Grades K-12 began the distance learning model on learning on Monday, November 30.  The distance learning model will continue through the remainder of the calendar year. 
The safe learning committee includes Todd Toulouse (admin/parent), Scot Osborne and Adam Erickson (board members/parents)  Lisa Fischer (NEA rep), Isabella Havemeier (student).  I consulted with the committee on November 12 before making the change to the distance learning model.  The committee and I are monitoring the COVID-19 case data and will discuss our learning model options again in later this month.  The number of COVID-19 cases in Nicollet County has increased by more than twelve times since we began the school year and continues to grow.  The number of cases in our 56074 zip code has increased by six times and continued to grow.  The most current case data is attached.
 
4. Russ Schumacher of Nexus will provide an overview of the upcoming facilities project.

Parent/Teacher Conferences:
Because of COVID, this year we conducted virtual conferences at all levels. The Elem. teachers tried to meet with all of their students. Secondary teachers reached out to specific students and families for conferences. If teachers were unable to meet with a student/family that evening, they tried to meet with them when both the teacher and family were available during a school day.

Description:  MS 123B.02, Subd. 6 permits the school board to accept donations or gifts for the benefit of the district.  The Superintendent recommends approving the donations received.

7. ACCEPT BOARD MEMBER RESIGNATION

Description: 
The superintendent recommends approving the resignation submitted by Eric Hopp.  
  1. The term for the position held by Eric expires on December 31, 2022.  
  2. The school board should appoint someone to serve as an interim school board member at the January 13th meeting.  This individual will hold office until a special election is conducted on November 2, 2021.
  3. A special election should be conducted on November 2, 2021 to fill the vacancy.  This individual will hold office through December 31, 2022.

8. RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING COMBINED POLLING PLACES

Description: 
The Superintendent recommends approving the resolution.  A special school election is necessary on November 2, 2021 to elect a school board member.  The election will also include an operating referendum because the levy approved in 2016 will expire.
9. ACCEPT MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT BIDS

Description: 
The superintendent recommends accepting the following bids totaling $416,050:
  1. SVL, Bid Line 01, $209,980
  2. SVL, Bid Line 02, $98,620
  3. Midwest Mechanical Solutions, Bid Line 03, $107,450
Bids for the equipment package, for the upcoming facilities project, were opened on December 8th.  A tabulation of the bids and letter of recommendation from Nexus is attached.
10. TRUTH AND TAXATION INFORMATION / PAYABLE 2021 LEVY

Description: 
The superintendent recommends approving the payable 2021 levy in the amount of  $1,444,650.71.  This represents a 10.65% increase compared to the 2020 levy.  Truth and taxation information will be presented by Mike Hoheisel of Baird Public Finance.
