5. PURCHASE OF CHROMEBOOKS
Agenda Item Type:
Action Item
Description:
Chromebooks will be needed for every student if we implement the hybrid learning model at any time during the school year. Our language arts curriculum (Wonders) is web-based only. The curriculum includes reading, phonics, handwriting, spelling, vocabulary, and grammar. The K-2 teachers were surveyed and unanimously agreed that it would not be possible to deliver the language arts curriculum without students having access to the web-based Wonders curriculum. The teachers recommended that each student have a Chromebook.
When we conducted distance learning last spring, all students were at home. Chromebooks were allocated per family, so students within the same household could share the same device. As a result, fewer Chromebooks were needed and every student had access to a device. Under the hybrid learning scenario, students are divided into two groups (A & B). The two groups of students attend school on different days. All students within a household will be assigned to the same group. However, when the students from a given household are in school, they will each need their own device. The Chromebooks can be purchased by reallocating existing budgets and utilizing available grants. The expenditure will not decrease our general fund balance.
The Superintendent recommends approving the purchase of 140 Chromebooks in the amount of approximately $38,764. |
