5. Solar Energy and Xcel Energy JEEP (Joint Energy-Efficiency Plan) Discussion
Description:
We'll discuss the recent visit with Xcel Energy and also the presentation at our Regular February Meeting where buying into a solar garden was discussed.
Notes from Rick Masloski - solar: Xcel rates have increased on average about 3.3% over the past 15 years. We have factored in a 2.75% increase per year for Xcel in our cash savings model. We start off with a 1cent/kWh savings with a 2% escalator. Assuming Xcel rates increase at 2.75%/year,on average, your savings will grow to about 3.5 cents/kWh by year 25. Looking at your bills you pay about 10 cents/kWh to Xcel. That 10 cents is made up of a number of things such as infrastructure costs, power lines, substations, environmental improvement rider on their 3 coal plants, administration costs, governmental fees and taxes, etc. None of these cost are going away and will only increase. From what I have been told the cost of producing electricity is only about 20% of the total cost so in your scenario--about 2 cents/kWh. Also, I had run the model at a 0% Xcel rate increase and it would take about 7 consecutive years of no Xcel increases to reach the breakeven point. |
