V. Superintendent’s Report – Recognition and Informational Items

V.A. Student of the Month
Description:
Lucy Lee will be in attendance so that we may recognize her accomplishments in being selected May Student of the Month.

V.B. IHSA State Journalism Champion
Description:
Eleanor Escobedo and the Journalism Teacher, Kristina Maestranzi, will be in attendance so that we may recognize her accomplishments in winning first place at the IHSA Journalism State Final for Photo Story Telling and the guidance Ms. Maestranzi has provided. Congratulations go to Eleanor for the State Championship win!

V.C. Excellence in Education Award – 4th Quarter
Description:
Alex Sullivan and Bob Schmitt will be in attendance to recognize their receipt of the 4th quarter Excellence in Education Award.

V.D. Curriculum & Instruction Update – Dr. Stacie Noisey
Description:
Dr. Noisey will be in attendance to provide a brief update on curriculum planning for next year, new textbook purchases, planned professional development and a grading pilot to take place in the fall.

V.E. Honors Night
Description:
Honors Night took place in the fieldhouse on May 3rd where we recognized the achievements of 68 students. Through the generous donations of our Grant community we were able to distribute $43,250 in local scholarships that evening as well. It is always a wonderful ceremony that provides an opportunity to recognize the efforts these dedicated students have put forth the past 4 years. The Honors Night program is included for your enjoyment.

V.F. Lake County Educator of the Year Awards
Description:
On May 10th, the Regional Office of Education hosted the Lake County Educator of the Year Awards ceremony. Two of our teachers, Joree Morris and Jeff Austin, were nominated for Lake County Educator of the Year awards. Three non-certified staff members, Lynda Gunther, Marissa Meyers, and Josh Staples, were nominated in their respective non-certified award categories. I am happy to report that Josh Staples, Director of Buildings and Grounds, was selected as the Lake County Educational Service Personnel winner! Once again, this event was a wonderful way to recognize the contributions of these individuals, with their families in attendance as well.

V.G. Hall of Fame 2023
Description:
The Hall of Fame Committee had the difficult task last week of selecting next fall’s inductees. I am happy to announce the following individuals will be recognized during homecoming festivities next September and recommended for induction into the GCHS Hall of Fame:

VII.A. November Board of Education Meeting Date **
Description:
As always, the November Board of Education meeting date is immediately prior to the Joint IASB, IASA, IASBO Conference. New this year, we have been invited to send a Board member, superintendent, and the student representative to the Board, to a full-day pre-conference session on Friday, November 17th. Additionally, we have at least one member interested in attending a pre-conference session on Thursday. I would like to discuss the possibility with the Board of shifting the November meeting date to Thursday, November 9th to accommodate attendance at the pre-conference sessions.

VII.B. Consolidated District Plan **
Description:
As a district that receives federal funds, we are required to have the Board of Education approve the new Consolidated District Plan. In previous years, only a Title I Plan required your approval. The new reporting process asks districts to answer one set of planning questions to meet the requirements of all 12 of the federal grants that may be available. As such, all the departments that completed their own grant applications previously have collaborated on the development of the attached plan.

VII.C. School Board Policy Modifications – Second Reading **
Description:
Following a first reading last month, I am recommending changes to the following School Board Policies based on direction from the Illinois Association of School Boards and legal counsel:

VII.D. Community Youth Network Counseling Support 2023/24 **
Description:
The Community Youth Network (CYN) Counseling Center is a Lake County nonprofit community counseling agency. They are a comprehensive mental health center that provides counseling, assessment, specialized treatment, prevention programs, case work services, and community education. We have partnered with CYN in past years to provide mental health support to students in need and assist us in proactively providing mental health supports. CYN will designate a social worker to be on campus one day per week to run social-emotional groups based on identified need, as well as provide additional support for struggling students and students in crisis. Recommend approval of a one-year agreement for CYN to provide one day of counseling services per week at a cost of $14,500.

VII.E. Lake County Health Department – Assessment and Counseling Services 2023/24 **
Description:
The Lake County Health Department (LCHD) and Community Health Center provides assessment and counseling services related to substance use and abuse. We are requesting to continue our partnership with LCHD to provide these valuable services to our students. Recommend approval of a one-year agreement for LCHD to provide 3.5 days of counseling services per week at a cost of $55,672.

VII.F. Overnight Travel Requests **
Description:
The Dance Team is requesting to attend the Dance Team Union Championship in Orlando, Florida, from February 9-11. Three coaches and approximately 15 student-athletes will attend. The entire trip will be self-funded, with families paying the cost to attend and fundraising efforts to offset the cost.
The Special Olympics Team is requesting to attend the State Competition in Bloomington from June 9-10. Two coaches and 4 student-athletes will attend. The District will cover the cost of travel for both coaches and meals for students, totaling $978.94. Students will be traveling with their families to and from the competition. If families need financial assistance, Foundation funds will be made available. Recommend approval of the overnight travel requests as presented. |
VII.G. Co-Curricular Sponsors 2023/24 **
Description:
The administration is recommending approval of the co-curricular sponsors for the 2023/24 school year as presented.

VIII.A. 2022/23 Amended Budget
Description:
Just a reminder, this is currently on display and will be on the agenda next month for approval.

VIII.B. Newsela Contract **
Description:
As Dr. Noisey mentioned in her presentation earlier, the English, Bilingual/ELL and World Languages departments have requested to use Newsela as a resource for 2023-2024. For English 9 and Spanish, it will replace a textbook, while our Bilingual/ELL classes will use it as an additional resource. Newsela provides authentic content to engage every student while providing background knowledge, connections and vocabulary to become engaged readers and increase fluency. Recommend approval of contract with Newsela for 2023-2024 for $17,520.

VIII.C. District Website Provider **
Description:
Earlier this year, we were notified by our district website provider Blackboard, Inc., that they were being purchased by another company. We took the opportunity from that upcoming change to investigate six different website platforms. The committee is recommending a switch to FinalSite beginning in 2023/2024 for a period of five years for a total cost of $78,305. I have included a recommendation from the committee in your board packet. Recommend FinalSite as the district website provider beginning in 2023/2024 for a total cost of $78,305.
