VI.C. Community Equity Committee
Description:
The first community Equity Committee meeting was held the evening of February 9th. The Committee meeting was facilitated by Jeremy Anderson, District Equity Coordinator, and included staff, students, parents, and community members. Efforts have already been underway with a number of involved staff members, but we look forward to expanding discussions about equitable practices to include more stakeholders. We look forward to learning together as a community, being very intentional with our equity efforts and taking actionable steps to providing a culturally responsive learning environment.

VI.D. Blended Learning
Description:
I would like to update the Board on a number of blended learning matters at the meeting, including in-person student attendance, academic performance, academic plans through remainder of school year, risk mitigation efforts, vaccination status of staff, and updated state and federal school guidance.

VI.E. Athletics and Activities
Description:
I am happy to report sports, clubs, and activities have resumed as a result of transitioning to Phase 4, following all public health protocols. Activities and clubs are proceeding partly in-person and partially remote for both practices and competitions. With recently released schedules for all 2020/21 sports, we are now determining how best to handle season crossover to support our multi-sport athletes and coaches. With contact days available for all out-of-season sports as well as practices and competitions for in-season sports, scheduling will be challenging. We will also have to closely follow practice schedules, as we need to ensure no student exceeds the IHSA established thresholds for weekly practice time.

VI.F. State Assessment
Description:
Superintendents have been in ongoing discussions with state and federal representatives over the past several months regarding challenges to in-person testing this spring. Any change to assessment would require a federal waiver. A group of 674 superintendents from districts across Illinois formally requested that such a waiver be considered and I’ve included a copy for your review. Fortunately, State Superintendent Carmen Ayala recently announced on February 5th that ISBE will advocate for the U.S. Department of Education to make waivers available for spring assessments. ISBE has acknowledged the challenges associated with in-person testing this spring and appear to support our focus on current instructional and social/emotional efforts.

VI.G. Graduation Requirements
Description:
Similar to the above discussion on state assessments, school administrators have also been in touch with State officials regarding graduation requirements for the Class of 2021. Last year, emergency modifications were approved at the State level for the Class of 2020 due to the pandemic. We remain hopeful modifications may be considered for the Class of 2021, as learning in remote and blended learning conditions has been difficult for some students. I will keep you posted as to what, if any, changes are recommended by the Illinois State Board of Education.
