8.1. Annual Certification of Serious Safety Hazard*
Background information: It is required that the BOE certify annually the continued existence of approved serious safety hazards in order to request reimbursement for transporting students less than 1.5 miles from school. Section 29-3 of the Illinois School Code (105 ILCS 5/29-3) provides that school districts shall annually review the conditions and certify to the State Superintendent of Education whether or not the hazardous conditions remain unchanged. The State Superintendent may request the Department to verify that conditions have not changed. Any such request by the State Superintendent shall be made to the Secretary of the Department. The Secretary will assign a request for verification to the appropriate District Office.

Recommended Action: Motion; Move to certify that the approved transportation safety hazards have not changed and that the hazards still exist for all areas.
