Description:  BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Rick Sansted will share with the board the "206 Points of Pride."  The persons being recognized this month are:

The Girls Basketball Team had a great season, earning the titles of Conference Champions and Section Champions and earning a trip to the State Tournament.

Our Boys Basketball Team also had a great season, taking the Conference Champion and Section Champion titles and placing 2nd at the MN State Basketball Tournament.

The Girls Hockey Team also took the Section Champion title and played in the State Tournament.

Our Wrestling Team took 2nd in Section Academic competition with an average GPA of 3.68.

Individual Academic All Section Wrestlers include AJ Sparr, Cole Vatnsdal, Kelly Johnson, Tate Runge and JP Rodel.

The Knowledge Bowl Team earned a trip to the State Knowledge Bowl Meet, where they placed 24th in the AA Division.

Girls Nordic Ski Team members Kaisa Bosek, Jaelyn Miller, Emma Reineke, Kamryn Coauette, Lauren Huber, Dulce Bakker, and Teresa Bitzan earned a chance to compete at the State Nordic Ski Tournament with Amanda Bergerson and Lauren Englund securing spots as alternates.

The Boys Swimming and Diving Team earned a Gold Award Standard for having a team GPA over 3.75, while Ethan Johnson was honored individually by the MN State Coaches Association for his 4.0 GPA during the swimming & diving season.

Boys Swimming and Diving State Tournament participants included Caden Kavanagh and Aidan Staples in diving and Thomas Williams, Logan Tung, Ethan Johnson, Torrey Olson-Rodel, Anthony Hoyt, Carter Holm, Nicolas Welle and Erik Reineke in various swimming events.

Over the course of the Swimming and Diving post-season, multiple records were set and honors achieved:
  • Nicolas Welle set Sartell pool records in the 50 and 100 freestyle, set Section records in the 50 and 100 freestyle, is the Section Champion in the 50 and 100 freestyle, set new school records in the 50 and 100 freestyle at the State Tournament and received All State Honors in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.
  • Logan Tung is the Section Champion and set a Sartell pool record in the 100 breaststroke and received All State Honors in the 200 medley relay, 200 IM, 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
  • Thomas Williams is the Section Champion in the 100 butterfly and received All State Honors in the 200 medley relay, 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
  • Anthony Hoyt set a new school record in the 500 freestyle at the State Tournament and received All State Honors in the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.

All State Honors were also awarded to the following swimmers:
  • Ethan Johnson for the 200 medley relay
  • Torrey Olson-Rodel for the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay
  • Carter Holm for the 200 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay

Mason McGrane finished 6th in the Class AA State Wrestling Tournament and earned All State honors. Additional wrestlers competing in the State Tournament included Blaze Nelson, Kelly Johnson, Tate Runge, Mason Teaser and Luke Maanum.

Senior, Kelsey Fletcher, earned a trip to the State Gymnastics Meet, where she competed in floor, vault and bars competition.

  • Sonja Schabel and Gabriella Staples (Marketing Management Team Role-Play)

Coach Aaron Rooney was named Section 5A Diving Coach of the Year and was chosen to judge Class AA diving at the State Tournament this year.

Wendy Kohler was chosen this year’s Section 8AAA Head Girls Basketball Coach of the Year, while Section 8AAA Assistant Girls Basketball Coach of the Year was awarded to Julie Wrobel.

Molly Arola has been named Section 8AA Head Girls Hockey Coach of the Year.

Senior, Grace Nowling-Morgen, was selected as an Aspirations in Computing Award Honoree in the Rising Star category. This honor is given to students who have attained some technology skills and demonstrated a commitment to continue to strengthen their skills and exploration of the field.

Nicolas Witt placed 4th and Marc Magaard placed 7th in the MN State Archery Tournament, high school division. In the middle school division, Ethan Giese placed 5th and Ian Johnson took 7th place.

Discovery Middle School had three students qualify for the State MATHCOUNTS competition: Alex Rodriguez, Sigfried Henrich and Thomas Dutcher.

Two 6th grade Math Masters teams completed in the regional competition in March. A total of 19 teams from across Minnesota participated in the event. Both District teams finished in the top 3, with several students taking individual honors.  The DMS Team 1, comprised of Thomas Dutcher, Alex Rodriguez, Sigfried Henrich, Elizabeth Wagner, and Grant Juelke, placed 2nd overall. The DMS Team 2, comprised of Jameson McAdoo, Hunter Krebs, Ezequiel Rodriguez, and Josh Makalinao, placed 3rd overall. The following students placed in the Fact Drill competition: Josh Makalinao (tied for 1st), Alex Rodriguez (3rd), Thomas Dutcher (6th) and Grant Juelke (tied for 9th). In addition, the following students placed in the individual problem solving competition: Alex Rodriguez (2nd), Thomas Dutcher (3rd), Elizabeth Wagner (5th), Sigfried Henrich (6th), Jamseon McAdoo (7th) and Josh Makalinao (10th).

The district administration is recommending that the board approve the following positions.  The Personnel/Negotiation Board Committee supports the recommended additions:
 
  • Request for a Booster/Honor Guard Coach
  • Request an additional .33 FTE @ AAHS
  • Request an additional 1.00 FTE elementary based on enrollment
  • Request a full-time gymnastic coach/coordinator position

  • Haugen, Kathy:  Activities Secretary, effective 6/4/2021 [date of hire: 9/16/2004]


RECOMMENDATION:

The administration recommends that the board approve the retirement of these individuals as requested, with appreciation for their years of service to the district.

 
V.E. APPROVE SUBMISSION OF GRANT APPLICATIONS

Description:  BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The administration recommends that the school board approve the submission of the following:
 
  • Grant application to ServeMinnesota/AmeriCorps for 4 FTEs to provide tutoring and enrichment to students in PreK-12th grade across all Community Education youth programs.
  • Grant application to MN DNR for $500 to purchase hardware cloth to maximize learning in the Miltona outdoor classroom.
  • Grant application to MDE for $50,000 to financially support 3-4 year-olds with preschool and childcare attendance for families living in poverty.


RECOMMENDATION:

The administration recommends the school board approve the resolution to submit the grant applications.
 
V.F. ADOPT RESOLUTION TO ACCEPT DONATIONS AND GRANTS

Description:  BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

As per district policy, the board is required to approve the submission and acceptance of donations and grants to the district that exceed $1,000.


RECOMMENDATION:

The administration recommends the school board approve the attached resolution accepting grants and donations to the school district.
V.G. APPROVE FIRST READING OF DISTRICT POLICIES

Description:  BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The following pages provide suggested policy additions or policy revisions for first reading.  Administration will review the policies at the meeting.

V.I. APPROVE SCHOOL DISTRICT AGREEMENTS

Description:  BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Annually, the school board approves educational agreements between the District and various consultants, agencies and service providers.


RECOMMENDATION:

The administration recommends the board approve the following agreements:
  • Memorandum of Understanding between Luther College and Alexandria Public Schools for the 2021-22 academic year
  • Lease Agreement between Douglas County and Alexandria Public Schools beginning July 1, 2021 through February 28, 2022

 
V.J. APPROVE SCHOOL FOREST DESIGNATION

Description:  BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Alexandria Public Schools currently have designated school forests at Miltona Elementary and the Alexandria Area High School.  In order to have a continuous program throughout all grade levels, we would like to designate a portion of land at Discovery Middle School as well.


RECOMMENDATION:

The administration recommends the school board approve the attached resolution designating a portion of land at Discovery Middle School as a School Forest.
 
V.K. APPROVE SCHOOL CALENDAR REVISION
Presenter:  Rick Sansted
Description:  BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Feedback from discussions with teachers, parents and administration led administrators to recommend adjustments to three dates in the 2021-22 calendar to provide consistency for family schedules and honor the legacy of national leaders.


RECOMMENDATION:

The administration recommends the school board approve the revisions to the 2021-22 school calendar as presented.

VII.A. ADOPT RESOLUTION PROPOSING TO PLACE STAFF ON UNREQUESTED LEAVE OF ABSENCE

Description:  BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The following pages provide the resolution which the school board is required to adopt identifying tenured staff members whose positions may be reduced in the upcoming school year due to changes in student enrollment and/or availability of funding.  Scott Heckert, Human Resources Director, will provide additional background information regarding the resolution.

This is the first of two steps in the process when tenured staff is involved.


RECOMMENDATION:

The administration recommends the board adopt the resolution proposing to place the following staff members on unrequested leave of absence:

Trevor Peterson will provide information about the bids received on April 13, 2021 for the School District’s construction projects.


RECOMMENDATION:

The administration recommends awarding the contract for the School District’s construction projects to Innovative Builders, the low bidder, for the base bid and alternates as identified by the board.
 
VII.C. APPROVE REIMBURSEMENT RESOLUTION

Description:  BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The following pages provide information relating to the compliance of the school district with the reimbursement bond regulations under the Internal Revenue Code.


RECOMMENDATION:

The administration recommends approval of the reimbursement resolution as presented.
