Governing Board Resolution in support of Legendary Teacher Day Thursday, September 25, 2014 Whereas, the Governing Board of the Coconino Association for Vocations, Industry, and Technology (CAVIAT) believes we have all had special teachers that made a significant difference in our lives; and Whereas, the CAVIAT Governing Board recognizes that those teachers demonstrated unique skills allowing them to transform their deep content knowledge into life changing student learning; and Whereas, the CAVIAT Governing Board highly values the caring family culture created by those teachers; and Whereas, the CAVIAT Governing Board understands that we often do not fully understand and recognize the profound influence teachers have on our future until we have lived our future; and Whereas, the CAVIAT Governing Board realizes the importance of taking time to fully recognize the legendary teachers in our lives; Therefore, Be it Resolved that the CAVIAT Governing Board does hereby affirm its support for September 25, 2014 as Legendary Teacher Day. 6.F. Grant opportunity through the National Science Foundation in partnership with NAU, STEM City, and T-Gen-Discussion and Possible Action Item
Description:
CAVIAT has been approached by folks with NAU, STEM City, and
T-GEN to be a part (and primary, if truly not sole recipients) of a grant with the National Science Foundation. I have been asked to work with them and will be presenting this to the board and requesting approval to proceed on 10/10. I meet with them right after the board agenda went out and I will continue to gather info about it, the process, timelines, etc., prior to our next meeting. The project revolves around the creation of a Bio-Science program that serves the county. It is a three year grant and the proposed flow and roll out of the course is as follows: · Establish a Medical Professions course. This is virtually the course we attempted to run in Williams but we are looking to reframe and beef it up. We will look to run this course (year one) in Williams and Flagstaff and any other member district that has the numbers. This course will be the “pilot” course that will lead into a Bio-Science program. · In year two of the grant, a lab and travelling lab kits would be established. This is to ensure lab experiences get to all students. Also, the grant with look to extend class experiences to the weekend or summer, if we can tackle lodging for students. This will be 16/17 and students will complete the entire ADE two year sequence of Bio-Science. · In year three, the grant will look to expand the distance learning modules and provide the class for the entire county. · The overarching theme for this is tracking flu for ALL of Coconino County. We will work with CCC to ensure dual enrollment credit is possible. Partners in the grant believe they might be able to work with NAU to get credit as well. |

This is a foundations course that provides a career exploration of EMT/EMS/ICS/Fire Service/Law. This class will be a prerequisite for Law (CAVIAT to CCC), Fire (CAVIAT to CCC) and EMS/EMT (CCC). Our students in the Year 2 program will complete the 2 year program in 1 year (CAVIAT Law or CAVIAT Fire).
