10.1. Trip to Italy for BCHS Latin and Italian Students in June 2019
Presenter:
Amy Bastiaanse and Kelly Monahan-Denoia
Rationale:
Having taken students to Europe 14 times over the past 22 years, I now seek the Board of Education’s approval to travel in 2019. Our ten-day trip always results in rewarding and memorable cultural experiences for students. Participating in an educational travel program holds a variety of benefits for our students. As part of their curriculum, students academically explore Italy. The trip adds new dimensions to students’ formal curriculum, expanding their views of the world and their perspectives of themselves and their own culture. Direct exposure to a foreign culture enhances months of classroom study. Students will develop a stronger appreciation and interest in ancient history, literature, and the arts. Participation in an educational travel program can also improve a student’s chances for college admission.

Teachers trained to serve as TEAM (Teacher Education and Mentoring) mentors and cooperating teachers provide assistance and support to student teachers and first- and second-year beginning teachers in the district in areas such as lesson design and classroom management and provide feedback and support in the areas of instructional planning and student assessment. Cooperating teachers are those trained to work with student teachers. The Connecticut State Department of Education requires that first- and second-year teachers receive mentoring and support. Principals recruit teachers to apply to be a TEAM mentor/cooperating teachers; the applications are reviewed by the TEAM Coordinating Committee. The following teachers were approved by the TEAM Coordinating Committee and are recommended to be TEAM Mentors/cooperating teachers. Approved teachers must attend a three-day training program and update their training every three years.
