8.3. Policy 5131.81 - Request for waiver of a portion of Electronic Devices Policy (First Reading)
Rationale:
We are proposing implementation of a pilot program, called Bring Your Own Technology at Bristol Central and Bristol Eastern High Schools. Students will be allowed to bring their own technology devices and use them in the classroom as part of the teaching and learning process. The goal of this pilot is to expand student access to technology for learning and to enable students to learn to use technology tools to understand content and add meaning to their learning, solve real-world problems, conduct research, collaborate with peers, and actively engage in learning. In order to allow students to use their own technology as part of this pilot program, we are requesting that the Board waive a specific section of the current policy about electronic devices. The portion of the policy to be waived is: …cellular telephones may not be turned on during the school day. Use of the device shall be limited to the period before classes being in the morning and after the student’s last class in the afternoon. Such devices shall not be used during instructional time… The BYOT pilot will be in place for the remainder of the 12-13 school year and during the 13-14 school year. In the spring of 2014, the pilot will be completed and recommendations made. If policy changes are required at that time, those changes will be presented to the Board. As part of the pilot, 60 Chromebooks will be purchased to supply technology tools to students who need them for use in the classroom.

Changes include (1) adjustment of the summer school grading policy to more accurately reflect grading practices used during the school year and (2) at the high school level, provide opportunities for students to make up semester 1 or semester 2 of a full year course when the student has passed one semester of the course during the school year.
