This school year, an art teacher from each high school will be completing the course, Introduction to Computer Graphics, at Tunxis Community College. The long-term goal is to create a Pathway that will enable Bristol students to acquire college credit. Once we meet Tunxis’ requirements, one full credit in Design (Design1/Design 2) would be equivalent to Introduction to Computer Graphics at Tunxis CC.

6.3. Elementary and Secondary Summer School Offerings - Summer 2010
Rationale:
Bristol offers a variety of Summer School programming for students in kindergarten through grade 12.
Elementary: Enrichment: These courses provide enrichment activities for elementary students. Enrichment courses are self-supporting. Tuition pays instructor salaries. The Director and secretary salaries are funded from the Board of Education budget. This program will be held at Ivy Drive School.
Intervention: A literacy intervention program is offered for students in grades K-3, who demonstrate significant weakness in reading. Priority school districts are required to offer a summer reading program to children exiting kindergarten who need additional reading and writing instruction. Additionally, priority school districts must require students in grades one, two, and three, who are substantially deficient in reading based on the May administration of the DRA, to attend summer school unless exempted by the superintendent of schools, upon recommendation of the principal, based on the student’s progress on the literacy plan. This program is grant funded. This program will be held at Hubbell School.
Middle School: District Program: This program offers the opportunity for students to make up courses for which they did not receive a passing grade. Grade 6-7-8 students required to make-up courses attend on a non-tuition paying basis. The Director of Secondary Summer School, the secretary positions, and teacher salaries for grade 6-7-8 make-up classes are funded by the Board of Education budget. This program will be held at Bristol Eastern High School.
High School: Courses offered in this program allow students to obtain credit for courses not successfully completed during the academic year. Grade 9 and 10 students required to make-up courses attend on a non-tuition paying basis. The Director of Secondary Summer School, the secretary position and teacher salaries for grade 9 and 10 make-up classes are funded by the Board of Education budget. Students pay tuition for grade 11 and 12 classes. This program will be held at Bristol Eastern High School |

7. Curriculum
|
|
7.1. New Curriculum - AP Environmental Science - Second Reading
Rationale:
A committee of science teachers has completed a curriculum to meet standards for Advanced Placement Environmental Science to be offered at both high schools next year. The Student Achievement Committee met on Friday, April 9, 2010 for a first reading of this curriculum and unanimously recommended that the curriculum be forwarded to the full board for a second reading.
|
|
7.2. New Curriculum - AP Language and Composition Curriculum - Second Reading
Rationale:
A Tier I goal of the district is to increase the number of opportunities students have to take college credit-bearing classes prior to their graduation from our high schools. With the addition of A.P. Language and Composition, our students will have a second opportunity to take a course for college credit within the English department. The curriculum for this course meets the CT Standards for English language arts as well as the requirements of the College Board. The Student Achievement Committee of the Board of Education met on April 9th for the first reading of the curriculum. If approved, students would have the opportunity to take this course in the 2010-2011 school year.
|
|
7.3. Grade 3 Mathematics Curriculum - Second Reading
Rationale:
The elementary mathematics curriculum was last revised in 2002.
The document submitted here is based on work by the Grade 3 Curriculum Committee which included Kristy Platt, Kate Wollenberg, Laura Kozlowski, Amanda Brezicki, Ann Marie Spinelli, Debra Vitale and Marlene Lovanio. |

8. Textbook Adoption
|
|
8.1. English Language Arts/Grade 8 Accelerated Drama Anthology Book Approval - First Reading
Rationale:
The accelerated curriculum for Grade 8 English language arts was recently revised by a committee and approved by the Board of Education on April 7, 2010. One of the units of instruction is called, “Theme and Form.” As part of this unit, students will be reading short stories, novels, and plays that express the same theme. Students will be determining how the genre or form of the story impacts the meaning and appeal of the text. At the moment, teachers and students have access to over fifty novels and many short stories, but they have limited access to drama. For this reason, we needed an anthology of plays for our students to read. After considering multiple options, we have selected two anthologies of drama: Best Plays for the Middle level and Best Plays for the Advanced Level. Both books are needed in order to provide our students with the opportunity to read and compare up to 14 plays with novels and short stories currently on our reading list.

|
8.2. English Language Arts/AP Language and Composition Textbook - First Reading
Rationale:
A.P. Language and Composition is a new course within our English department at the high school level. In this course, students are expected to read a wide range of nonfiction essays in order to analyze the rhetorical techniques used by these authors. Students will also use these essays as models for their own writing. While the College Board does not recommend one specific textbook, they do recommend a number of authors and essays students should read. We selected a text in which the majority of these essays can be found. The committee of English language arts teachers is recommending for approval the following anthology:
Please read the attached documents for details regarding the selection process including information regarding the alignment of the textbook with our curricula. |
|
8.3. AP Environmental Science Textbook
Rationale:
The curriculum committee completing work on the AP Environmental Science class is recommending the following textbook to support student learning in that class: Environment: The Science behind the Stories – Third Edition by Jay Withgott & Scott Brennan |
|
8.4. Information Processing 2 Textbooks
Rationale:
In December, the Board of Education approved the Information Processing 2 curriculum. This curriculum has been articulated with Tunxis Community College and will provide students who successfully complete the class with 3 college credits. As part of the articulation agreement with Tunxis, the district agrees to use the same textbooks as the college. The following texts are recommended for adoption and use in the Information Processing 2 class:
|
|
8.5. Secondary Visual Arts Textbooks - First Reading
